A name that means glass

Sklo is the Czech word for glass, and SkLO designs for one craft: Czech glassblowing. The company began in 2009 in the wine country of Northern California. Its partners are Pavel Hanousek, who has long worked with the glassblowing tradition of his native Czech Republic, and the husband-and-wife design team Karen Gilbert and Paul Pavlak.

Made where the craft lives

All SkLO glass is blown by hand in the Czech Republic, and every light is built to order there. SkLO traces Czech glassblowing back to the 13th century. Where its designs are made, it says, “is the primary concept behind SkLO”. It also says it makes 80% of the components in its products itself.

No two pieces alike

Because every piece is shaped by hand, the size, tint and colour of the glass vary a little, and small bubbles are part of the design. If you need a row of pendants that match exactly, that matters. SkLO treats the variation as intent. Twin shows the process most plainly: two flattened spheres in two colours, melded together while hot on the glassblower’s pipe.

Glass shaped more than one way

Peak and Balance come in dipped glass, with a double-dipped, flame-polished mouth, or textured glass, frosted and lined with fine vertical ridges. Pillow nests a lit sphere into a frosted recess, and Bloom gathers small glass pods against a white diffuser. Many of the pendants can be grouped on one of SkLO’s multi-pendant canopies.

Brass that holds the glass

Angle sets glass spheres on asymmetrical frames of brass tubing, and Hold hangs its glass from a brass hook. Union, Elizabeth, Crown and Perla come from the SkLO + AvroKO collection, a collaboration between SkLO and the AvroKO Partners. There the brass carries the detail: a profile above the glass on Elizabeth and Perla, a dome over Crown, a detailed fitting between Union’s domes.
