Lambert & Fils is unusual: it designs and makes its own lighting in Montreal. The studio says every piece is made by hand in its atelier there, as it has been since 2010. It’s about two hours down the 417 from us. You’ll find Flux Lighting on the studio’s own list of where to buy in Ottawa.

A studio that started with one shop on Rue Beaubien
Samuel Lambert spent years as a film editor before he opened a small showroom with a workshop at the back, on Rue Beaubien in Montreal’s Little Italy, in 2010. Lambert says the studio prototypes in-house and even designs its own LEDs, aiming to keep the warmth of an old incandescent bulb. Lambert calls the idea behind it all matière première: let the material do the talking.
Laurent: milk-glass globes on brass and aluminum
Laurent launched at the Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk, Belgium, in 2016. Each globe is milk glass, hand-blown in Quebec, and held by slender brass and aluminum planes so it seems to sit inside a drawing. Over a dining table the milk glass softens the light rather than throwing it at you, and in a stairwell a larger composition becomes something you notice every time you pass it.
Beaubien and Dot: lines you can draw a room with
Beaubien is named for the street where the studio began, and it carries that early spirit: powder-coated rods, curved shades and exposed brass joints, with a little Memphis-era geometry in the mix. Dot is simpler. It strings bare globes along a thin metal line. Their linear versions suit an island or a long table, where one fixture can run the full length of it.
Silo, Parc and Isle: one studio design, two collaborations
Silo is what the studio calls a modular alphabet in extruded aluminum, with tubes and joints that come together as chandeliers, wall lights or a single clean pendant. Parc, designed with Swiss designer Adrien Rovero, comes as suspension, wall, table and floor lamps, so one family can follow you from room to room. Isle is the quiet one. Made with Montreal designer Zoë Mowat, it rests a frosted glass cylinder on solid stone and aluminum. Over a table or an island, it draws a soft line of light.
