Melina, by Mentsen, strings small dimpled glass shades on bronze-coloured textile cord, like beads. The clear etched glass glows softly from inside. Each shade hangs from a cast bronze fitting made in the UK by lost-wax casting. Hand & Eye calls it “a more high-tech version of a technique that has existed for thousands of years”.
It comes as a single, double or triple. Each hangs as one loop of cord from a 125 mm ceiling rose. Two sets can share a larger 300 mm rose, as two loops, for four, five or six shades. Hand & Eye also makes bespoke arrangements, up to large chandelier installations, and a Melina wall light with the same glass.
Six shades is the largest standard set. Down a stairwell, it links one level to the next. Over a table, it reads as a small chandelier.
